Ferrero announced sustainable packaging goals last year
Italian confectionery giant Ferrero, the owner of Nutella spreads and Tic Tac candy, has revealed new goals to reduce its carbon footprint by the end of the decade.
One aim is to halve “all emissions” across its operations by 2030, in line with the UN Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Ferrero also said in a statement it has committed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 43% for “each ton of product produced”, using 2018 as the base year.
Giovanni Ferrero, the executive chairman of Ferrero, said: “As we approach the end of 2020, we are defining a new strategy and commitments to ensure we tackle the sustainability risks and opportunities that are most pertinent to our growing business. In our new report, we provide a first glimpse of our new strategic sustainability priorities, including our new climate goal towards 2030.”
Ferrero said it has has developed a roadmap to reduce emissions from plants, warehouses and its main offices, and will work with suppliers to help meet its 2030 emissions target.
The new initiative builds on last year’s announcement to make Ferrero’s packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, and as part of that endeavour, the company joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.
And with two months to go until the end of the year, the Ferrero Rocher owner said it is on track to source 100% “segregated and traceable cocoa beans”, by the end of December from 81% in 2019.
